  • Song of Everlasting Sorrow: Part IV Review

As the story progresses further along, I'm quite convinced that beauty is a crime. Yes, it seems to cost Qi Yao trouble more than anything. Even when she's finally mature and realizes her father's words are true, but she couldn't stop or avoid those problems from happening no matter how hard she tries to hide herself or try to walk away from the drama. (Hope that this time it won't be too gruesome although Qi Yao has really grown and is a stronger person than 8 years ago.)

On a side note, I must give some credit to Lei Lei for enduring such pain/ suffering in order to succeed/ achieve. She seriously could endure marrying someone just for the sake of her career. I could almost feel sorry for her when seeing the exact scene of reality striking down on her. But it's a bit extreme to just decide on the spot like that and then realizing the outcome and it's too late to turn back.

Looking on the bright side, Mr. Chen is finally back after so many hardships that he'd gone through to prove himself capable. Hopefully he didn't get conned and could finally get his paper work through with the government. (He seriously needs to come back because he's in danger! Someone's moving in on his territory! He needs to come back to protect his precious gem! )

Question: Why do they always display such delicious foods? Makes me want to try it out too.

I seriously hope that Mr. Chen doesn't have to wait until he's 70 or older to finally have a happy ending. This guy really needs a break.

Sometimes Qi Yao's mother just annoys the world out of me. She makes it sound like Mr. Chen is just around the corner all the time for Qi Yao. Yes, he's a too polite and seems weak sometimes but he's a talented person living in such a time. So how could she judge him and look down on him like that? But then again, it's typical with the thinking like that during those times.

Qi Yao finally realizes Mr. Chen's significant to her and wants to go talk to him but it seems like it's too late because of a third person. Maybe it's her turn to wait for him since he had waited for her so long already. Life just have to throw one of its curveballs, right? Let's just hope she doesn't hook up with the other dude just for kicks. After all, he's got connections with the current government. It's kind of risky, considering her past. For once, I'm glad Lei Lei set Qi Yao straight about her feelings and priorties. It's one of those rare times where she doesn't just cares for herself but speaks up for Mr. Chen wholed-heartedly because of the injusticeness that she feels from within.

A cruel twist of fate brings in misunderstandings mixed with assumptions and there goes Qi Yao and Mr. Chen, drifting apart once again. It's sad to see Qi Ya continuing to see only those around her but not the person who has been there for her throughout. I'm getting frustrated with the plot but still watching to see what else is going to happen. Mr. Chen finally gets a different job and probably for the better since that school was just too horrific.

For once, Qi Yao's mother is right about Mr. Chen and his current status. It's strange how she clings to him so dearly and tries to help him as much as she could - like her husband once did. It's probably because - like I stated above - time has passed and so many things has happened yet Mr. Chen is always around supporting them. It's also funny that she tries to encourage him on with saying they're family, etc. And she's so right this time about knowing more than her daughter.

It's too obvious that Qi Yao's just getting together with the other dude because of loneliness. I swear when she knows about Mr. Chen not being attached and it was just all her assumptions, she changed a few shades - not to mention her moods are all wrong for the pictures. Her smile is more force than ever. Somehow, I don't feel sorry for her though but more for Mr. Chen upon his realization of her relationship with the other dude. I know that it's unavoidable and he will find out eventually, but it's just too heart-breaking at the moment where he finds out the truth. You can just feel your heart shattering into millions of pieces along with his. (Okay, so cliches but it makes me want to bang someone over the head for throwing in that kind of plot. Ugh...) I was laughing out loud upon hearing the doctor congratulated Mr. Chen since she congratulated the wrong person, but then I almost want to cry for Mr. Chen because he seriously DOES NOT need to know this or deserves to endure anymore pain than he already have.

I sort of enjoy the part where Qi Yao's mother scolded her for breaking Mr. Chen's heart again, but what's more messed up about the whole thing is saying that she's unfortunate to experience another blow from her daughter. I meant she even went and and encouraged Qi Yao years ago and now she's saying that it's all Qi Yao's fault. Yes, it's Qi Yao's fault for stepping into such a path and making such decisions, but she went on and encouraged it, even arguing with her husband. So what is she acting pitiful for? Dramas again. Hates it. Why can't they just focus on Qi Yao's independent as a woman instead of showing her stepping into another wall? And why make her always choosing the pathetic, irresponsible man? Mr. Li is not taking responsibilities because he has his reasons - legit ones, but this dude? He's just a pathetic, pretentious guy. Ugh...and I honestly can't feel sorry for her - unlike last time that I actually felt something in the end, even if I dislike her actions. I DO NOT see any sparks between her and this guy despite the fact that they're probably around the same age.

Mr. Chen seems to be a person who lacks bravery but he's just a quiet guy who is of little words. However, his supportive actions counts for more than anything, unlike some people that are all talks. His only downfall is falling for such a woman, leading to his tragic life. I'm beginning to feel more and more that 'song of everlasting sorrow' is aiming at him rather than Qi Yao since he's the one who's living a torturous life. She's just inflicting pain onto herself knowingly. Why all the crying and pitiful act? I mean she seriously knows it would happen one day. It's getting pathetic. Although Mr. Chen does somewhat deserves it too since he keeps clinging on it, but it's just so frustrating to see such conflicts arising again after so many years. And I thought Qi Yao has already learned her lesson.

It's funny and ironic how I like Lei Lei more and more towards the end of the series. It's like she no longer cares to take any actions towards Qi Yao but her sense of injustice for Mr. Chen makes it even more sympathetic in a way.

So someone finally realizes that he's a despicable, irresponsible dude? Great. Nice to know. TOO LATE. I'm not putting the total blame on him since it was Qi Yao's fault too since she just decided to dive into this whole thing, knowing he can't do much for her. BUT it's just frustrating to see how many cowards there are in here that claims to be otherwise.

It's also funny that Yao Yao and Lei Lei finally resolve their little conflict after so many years. It's like they no longer care and Lei Lei has matured over time, considering so many things has happened that she no longer want to care. And nice to see Lei Lei as the baby's godmother. Maybe it might be just for the better that they remain friends after all, instead of getting involved in a much more complicated one, regarding all parties - Yao Yao, Lei Lei, and Mr. Chen.

It's a bit surprising that they decided to pull a 'death' like when finally the three made peace and are getting along again like they once were, except on a more mature level. It's also surprising that they should choose the person I least suspected. Usually, they would make the main character more tragic with a final blow of death. Or maybe being a survivor and witnessing everything in front of your eyes while not being able to control your fate is even worse?

Somehow, Lei Lei's memories of the past and her analysis made me feel a bit better because I'm not so dumb after all for picking up some hints in regards to Yao Yao's initial feelings towards Mr. Chen and her persistency to maintain a friendship with Lei Lei when they were young. It's so sad and tragic during Lei Lei's last moments. The flashbacks of young memories were so tear-jerking in a way.

It's a bit sad that Mr. Chen never got to see his god-daughter grow up, etc. It would've been cool if her first word is his name, lol. It would've been great also to see her childhood memory filled with him. How funny that Qi Yao's daughter is so unlike her. Maybe the influence of Mr. Chen? Just a hunch. (Still great to see Mr. Chen back and getting along so well with his god-daughter. The reunion is quite touching.) I almost thought they're going to kill him off too and let Qi Yao struggle to live alone, trying to raise a child and battle out whatever forces coming her way.

It's beginning to become so twisted that I lost faith for this series. I thought the last episode would come out to be just fine but I let my breath out too early. Gosh! Unbelieveable. If they want to be controversial, they don't have to go this far. What's wrong with her anyway? I know she could care less for criticism and all, but she has a daughter now. She has to be more responsible. Making a mistake once is enough. Second time? It's just plain stupid. WAY beyond disappointed. It's outrageous that her daughter finally respects her and cares for her but she just disregards all of that to have her 'two-minute' happiness. (Taking the picture frames down from the walls are signs of guilt BUT I no longer sympathize her. It's too pathetic that she should have common sense by now.)

It's BEYOND pathetic that she says that it's all right that she's living alone by herself. (Oh yeah, so that she can shuffle in between, right?) Brushing off and living in denial about her age is equally pathetic. No wonder she loves sweet talks and keeps choosing the wrong guy, even at this age.

Mr. Chen finally stands up for himself for once. How could she treat him like that? What people like him? I understand that she's under pressure and with how other people wants her to like him, but it doesn't mean she can take it out on him since he has been saying he's fine as her friend. Many years has passed already so although he hurts but he doesn't say anything. What about her? She wants to follow her feelings and live her life and not let others judge her, but does she realize that the dude was with her daughter? Although he was just using her daughter to get to her, but can't she see what kind of despicable person he is? By using those tactics? She's pathetic also to not see that the loser only cares for her beauty. Upon realizing that she had actually age (and he hadn't notice before), he ditched her. I guess her mother is right after all. She just likes to slam herself into walls endlessly. She wants to be happy yet she keeps inflicting pain upon herself and then blames it on others. Again, pathetic!

I end up liking the neighbor more towards the ending. I thought she was just being a nosy person and only looked out for her family but she was quite understanding in the end with how she sided with Mr. Chen and told him not to beat himself up over stuffs.

The ending was totally unexpected. I meant I knew somehow that he was going to die but NOT in the feeling that I could forgive Qi Yao instantly like that. Must admit Maggie's portrayal's really good thus leading it to be convincing.

This was an interesting series overall. However, I do not recommend it since it could be very frustrating at one point or another. All cast - Betty Huang, Tse Kwan Ho, and Maggie Cheung - did very well. It was quite a production.
